New apps increase the risk of being a distracted driver

Drivers in Ohio and across the U.S. have enough to worry about with trying to be safe and avoid an accident without new and risky behaviors adding to their concerns. However, with people as busy as they are and the variety of different ways they could stay dialed in, the number of dangers on the road has increased. With the increasing number of activities available through mobile devices, the problem is only getting worse. Those who are involved in an auto accident need to make certain they understand how and why it happened as they seek to be compensated in a legal action.

Texting and driving is a known risky activity, and states are trying to discourage the practice through legislation and penalties. There are also increasing factors that contribute to a distracted driver including using social media, maps, watching videos and a relatively new game called "Pokemon Go." In the past, simply talking on a mobile phone was viewed as a significant problem and consistent cause of a car collision. The number of apps that can cause a distraction and lead to an accident are growing in an exponential manner.

Surveys have indicated that 70 percent of teens use apps when operating a vehicle. This survey spoke to 2,500 young people of high school age. Nearly one-third believed that alcohol use was the most dangerous activity behind the wheel. Next came one-quarter who felt that texting was the biggest danger. Lastly, 6 percent believed that social media is the biggest danger.

A separate survey spoke to 2,400 drivers ranging in age. Nearly two-thirds stated that they used Facebook while behind the wheel; 37 percent admitted to using Twitter; 35 percent and 33 percent used YouTube and Instagram respectively.

The numbers show that around 1,000 people are injured in a car collision and more than eight are killed every day because of a distracted driver. It could be even higher as it can be difficult to determine exactly what was the preceding incident before a crash. Considering these statistics and realities, it is no surprise that there is an increase in those suffering a serious injury or dying in an auto accident because of a distracted driver.

Those who were in a car accident and believe that it was due to a distracted driver need to protect themselves and have full investigation. A legal action such as a personal injury suit could help victims recover compensation for the losses and damages incurred.
