Computer texting and driving game shows its dangers

Campaigns and various tactics to dissuade Ohioans from distracted driving are prevalent. Given the number of ways in which a driver can lose focus on the main goal of operating the vehicle safely, it is not a shock that drivers try to multitask. No matter how skillful a driver believes he or she is, a frequent cause of crashes is distracted driving. Those who are on the road need to be cognizant of this reality and that it can cause a car accident.

Because simply telling drivers that texting and driving is dangerous does not seem to be having the desired effect, the New York Times took steps to show drivers just how risky it is by creating a simulation that can be completed on a computer. This game was intended to show drivers how much their reaction time is negatively affected when trying to text while driving. According to the report, drivers believe they can do more than one thing at a time while driving and remain safe. The game conducts measurements to show just how dangerous distractions are.

As they play, the person who is "driving" will control a vehicle on a highway with multiple lanes and use the computer keyboard to try to change lanes. A cellphone is placed on the screen and will show an incoming text message. The driver is supposed to reply to the message using the computer mouse while simultaneously using the other hand to change lanes. Just as driving and doing other things is hard, so too is completing this game.

Although smartphone technology is advancing to the point where people do not need to be so hands-on with their devices to communicate while doing other things, texting and driving is still problematic. It can lead to severe injuries and even death to the person texting, passengers and other drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians. Those who have been in automobile accidents with a driver who is believed to have been engaging in a behavior leading to him or her being a distracted driver need to know the facts. Simple suspicion that a driver was behaving negligently is not enough. A full investigation must be conducted to move forward with a legal filing to get compensation. This is why it is imperative to speak to a lawyer as soon as possible.
