Workers in Ohio and across the U.S. who are injured on the job can suffer the injuries in a variety of ways. However, the jobs that are considered more dangerous than others might not be the ones that cause the most injuries. Between the years of 2010 and 2014, 32 percent of people in the nation that suffered a workplace injury did so when lifting, carrying and lowering materials.
These injuries happened most frequently in the manufacturing and retail arenas with the majority of injuries happening from the handling of material at 37 percent. Next came the oil and gas sector at 34 percent. 16 percent of people who were a work accident victim slipped, tripped or fell. Being hit by or crashing into an object accounted for 10 percent of the accidents. 7 percent were accidents involving tools while 4 percent were linked to repetitive stress.
Claims that were made due to workplace injuries varied in those that were suffered. 30 percent were strains and sprains, 19 percent were contusions and 5 percent each were fractures and contusions. Larger businesses most frequently had strains and sprains. Smaller businesses most often had cuts and punctures. Construction and manufacturing most commonly had claimants who suffered eye injuries.
Across the nation, there has been a notable improvement in the frequency at which workplace accidents with injuries occur, but it still remains an issue. Research has shown that the private sector has more than 3 million people injured or made ill at work. This is a reduction of around 3.6 million from twenty years ago.
Many workers who suffer injuries do not even realize that the damage is slowly accumulating and it does not have to be work that involves significant physical exertion. Such injuries as carpal tunnel have caused nearly 34 days out of work for every 10,000 people who were working full time in 2014.
Injuries at work can happen in any job. Those who are performing a physical activity with heavy equipment and known risks or those who are working in an office can all face this problem. In some instances, they have trouble being compensated for their injuries. It is at this point that injured workers should take the time to understand their rights after workplace accidents. These injuries could cause workers to incur several expenses while missing out on work. Workers' compensation could help them recover benefits that could address these costs and lost wages.
