Bio

Alissa J. Magenheim is a native to southern Ohio, having grown up in Cincinnati. She has been an aggressive competitor in all aspects of her life, going head to head with the big dogs. In College, Alissa started fencing, a sport dominated by men at that time. She was one of the first women to fence in the Santelli Open Sabre Tournament. Later, during law school, she continued fencing and won the championship at the Kadar Open in Cleveland.

This competitive edge has served her well in her academic and professional life. While an undergraduate at the University of Rochester, Ms. Magenheim was awarded 1st prize in the Creative Writing Contest, category of drama, three years running. She was also awarded the Pearl Stearling Evans Award for most promising woman writer. At Case Western Reserve University Law School, Ms. Magenheim was awarded the Student Public Interest Fellowship, and served as the Justice of the Phi Alpha Delta legal fraternity.

In her professional carrier, Ms. Magenheim has handled many different types of cases. Often, she butted heads with big firm guns, but did not back down. She has represented individuals who have fallen at area hospitals and nursing homes, many of whom were elderly. In most cases, Ms. Magenheim was able to resolve their cases without delay. However, when this was not possible, she took them all the way to trial.

Ms. Magenheim has also represented people against big pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers. But whether it is a complex case or a car accident case, Ms. Magenheim stands by her clients and fights for their rights.

Alissa speaks about a case that was special to her:

The most meaningful cases that I have handled have not always been the ones with the largest money damages, but made the most difference in my client's life. In one case, I represented a young woman who had been assaulted by her boss and who, as a result of that assault, lost much of her feeling of self-worth and self-confidence. By standing up and fighting for her in court, I could see the strength return to her. Shortly after the case resolved, she wrote me to express how much her life had changed, not just from the money recovery, but from being able to stand up to the person who had hurt her.

In another case, I represented a young boy and his mother who were injured in a car wreck. The boy's eye was injured by shattered glass. It meant a lot to this family not only to have the monetary settlement for his medical bills, but also to have a fund set up for him later in life when he would have to deal with that loss as an adult. A mother never stops worrying about her children and the settlement and the protected future funds made all the difference for them both.

Many of our friends and family rely on implanted medical devices to live and function normally every day. In one of my cases, a young girl's deafness was supposed to be cured by an implantable medical device. Unfortunately, it was defective. I was able to make it possible for the family to plan for the future and security of that child.

Likewise, we rely on our medical facilities, hospitals and nursing homes, to care for our parents, spouses, children, and keep them safe from falls and other hazards. In several cases, I represented elderly persons who were not protected and who fell while in such a facility as a result of carelessness on the part of the nursing , the cleaning or maintenance staff. I have helped them to resolve their claims, and have also taken the hospitals and nursing homes to trial when a settlement could not be reached. One client said to me after we resolved her case that she wanted to use some of her settlement to give something back her daughters who had helped care for her during her months of recovery. The smile that she shared and this sentiment was worth all the difficulties we had during the case.

Over the years, I have had many clients come back to me and ask me to help them and their families. For a few, I have become involved in their lives and their children have run to me. At the end of the day, after the case has settled, the trial has ended, the jury has gone home and all the dust has settled - this is what has meant the most to me.
